The Faculty of Philosophy is the oldest Faculty at the University of Belgrade in Belgrade. The beginnings of the Faculty of Philosophy date back to year 1838 when, by the Prince Miloš Decree, the Lyceum School was established in the city of Kragujevac. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a modern institution of higher education that follows all current trends in educational systems across the globe.

At present, the Faculty of Philosophy teaching stuff employs about 255 professors and enrolls around 5000 students at all academic levels offering bachelor, master and doctoral programs for nine different renowned departments, some of which with a history over hundred years long: Department of Philosophy, Department of Sociology, Department of Psychology, Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy, Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, Department of History, Department of History of Art, Department of Archaeology, and Department of Classics. Educational, scientific, research and development activities of the Faculty of Philosophy are realized with accordance to the Higher Education Act No. 12/76/2005/01, and further legal amendments.

As a part of Bologna Declaration, the Faculty of Philosophy has reformed undergraduate studies, and improved master and doctoral programs as well. As a result, the graduate, master and doctoral levels now offer over 800 different study courses within nine departments. The introduction of one-semester courses and new evaluation methods, which gives greater weight to practical training and to intensive research projects, made the Faculty of Philosophy academic degree standards and quality assurance standards more compatible with European standards of higher education. These modifications and adjustments have caused for the Faculty of Philosophy to become a modern institution of higher education that not only follows all current trends in educational systems across the globe but comes forward in some as well. The reformed academic programs and new evaluation system have allowed not only students of the Faculty of Philosophy to transfer earned credits and continue education at any institution of higher education in Europe but they have also allowed international students enrolled in other universities to continue their education at the Faculty of Philosophy. The relationship with world’s leading universities and scientific institutions has been established, and the student and professor exchange programs have started developing and improving as well establishing the Faculty of Philosophy to become a significant element in generating contemporary higher education tendencies.

Despite all these transformations, the Faculty of Philosophy, which celebrates July 1st as the Day of the Faculty of Philosophy, has remained its identity as it continued to nurture the tradition of over 170 years long, ascertaining itself as the efficient elite institution of higher education capable of responding to all tasks of our present time. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is not only a place where lectures and science projects are being conducted; today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a place of student gathering, a place of debates and sporting events, a place of book promotions and conventions, a place of growing and exchanging luminous ideas.

The Faculty of Philosophy provides Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral study programs through its nine departments: Department of Philosophy, Department of Sociology, Department of Psychology, Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy, Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, Department of History, Department of History of Art, Department of Archaeology, and Department of Classics.
The language of instructions in all Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral study programs is Serbian.  Some departments offer courses in English or other languages if necessary and obtainable.
Study programs and study specializations taught in Serbian are intended to reflect the outcomes of the Bologna Declaration and current trends in higher education.  All the departments of the Faculty of Philosophy offer 4-year Bachelor’s study programs, followed by 1-year Master’s study programs, and 1-year Specialization study program or 3-year Doctoral degree programs.  
The credit system at the Faculty of Philosophy conforms to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).  One academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS – credits that are equivalent to 1500 – 1800 hours of study proportionally distributed into two semesters, i.e. 30 credits per semester. It is the credit accumulation system and corresponding grades of credits are allocated to subjects that form a part of the study program.

The basic framework adopted is of three cycles of higher education qualification. The cycles are defined in terms of qualifications and European Transfer and Credit Accumulation System (ECTS) credits:

• 1st cycle: Undergraduate Studies – typically 240 ECTS credits / 8 semesters / 4 years – usually awarding a Bachelor’s Degree
• 2nd cycle: Postgraduate Studies – typically 60 ECTS credits / 2 semesters / 1 year – usually awarding a Master’s degree
• 2nd cycle: Postgraduate Studies – typically 60 – 120 ECTS credits / 2-4 semesters / 1-2 years – usually awarding a Specialization degree
• 3rd cycle: Postgraduate Studies – typically 180 ECTS credits / 6 semesters / 3 years – usually awarding a Doctoral degree
