Course objectives: The main objective of this course is to acquaint students with some of the most important ideas and problems in normative political theory.

Course description: This course aims at examining different types of normative justification in political theory. In the first part of the course we will explore such topics as legitimacy, authority and political obligation. The second part focuses on the ideas of consent and social contract in their modern and contemporary guises (Rawls, Buchanan). We will devote the third part of the course to examination of democratic legitimacy. To this end, we will focus on different ways of justifying democracy.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course students are expected to improve their analytical skills and bring forth well-formed arguments in normative political theory.
