Psychology – Bachelor’s Degree 2014
Hellenistic Philosophy
Status: optional
Recommended Year of Study: 1
Recommended Semester: 2
ECTS Credits Allocated: 6.00
Pre-requisites: No prerequisites.

Course objectives: The course will make students familiar with the basic and most important discussions that marked the epoch, through the study of three confronted dominant traditions of Hellenistic philosophy: stoicism, epicureanism and skepticism.

Course description: The theoretical part of the course includes an array of subjects related to the ancient skepticism, both concerning its historical development and inherent problems, especially the problem of apraxia. The other theoretical part of the course deals with the stoic and epicurean ethics. Because of the scarcely preserved sources, a special attention is paid to the contemporary reconstructions and interpretations. During the seminars, the texts relevant for the lecture themes are analized through the students discussions and presentations.

Learning Outcomes: Gaining knowledge of Hellenistic philosophy, its historical development, the basic problems of stoicism, epicureanism and skepticism, and the characteristically philosophical responses to these questions.
