ECTS Credits Allocated: 10.00

Course objectives: Examination of the various relations and mutual influences between philosophy and science, with particular emphasis on historical changes in these relations.

Course description: Historical detachment of sciences from philosophy took place in the 19th century, although in the past it was always possible to distinguish so-called metaphysical, or philosophical, from empirical aspects of various sciences. The unusual situation arose in the 20th century when scientists, particularly mathematicians and physicists, faced with the problem of foundations and the crisis in their own science, they became philosophers dealing with precisely those issues that are traditionally dealt with within metaphysics, a discipline that lies at the basis of all science. Examination of this unusual phenomenon and a variety of directions in which the relationship of philosophy and science has developed are the central topics of this course. In addition to mathematics and physics, particular attention will be paid to psychology and its philosophical foundation.

Learning Outcomes: Student will acquire a broad view of the relation between philosophy and science in the modern age.
