Course objectives: Acquisition of basic knowledge about the development of schooling and education in Serbia from Middle Ages to today and training students for critical understanding of social-historical context in which the schooling in Serbia was developed.

Course description: Theoretical course: Teaching and education in Serbia in the Middle Ages, Serbian schools’ work and organization in Habsburg Monarchy. Terezian school reforms and Josephinism. Education and schooling in Serbia in the period of 1804-1830. School system, school network, school legislation, lesson plans and programmes, teaching, students and teachers in Serbia in the period of 1830-1868. Textbook literature development. Changes in Serbian schooling in the last decade of the 19th and in the beginning of the 20th century. School legislation, school system, school network in The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes – Yougoslavia between the two world wars. Practical course: Practice: Schools, teachers and students, methods and contents of teaching in the medieval Serbia. Founding and the work of Serbian Orthodox gremarschool, Teacher College in Sremski Karlovci, Teacher College in Szentendre and School for teachers in Sombor. Curriculum, teaching, students and teachers in Serbia in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Pedagogical education of teachers in Serbia. Pedagogical museum’s role in preserving the educational heritage. Autobiographies/Memoirs as resources for pedagogical historiography.

Learning Outcomes: Student: - Has acquired the basic knowledge about the history of schooling and education in Serbia. – Is capable of analysing the historical resources in the research in the field of the history of schooling. – Has developed awareness about the historical conditions in which the schooling in Serbia was developed.
