Course objectives: Introducing students to the history of pedagogical thought, development of critical relation towards historical pedagogical heritage and different theoretical-methodological approaches in the field of history of pedagogical ideas.

Course description: Theoretical courses: Subject and tasks of the history of pedagogy. Approaches to studying the pedagogical history. The history of pedagogy in the system of pedagogical disciplines. Greek paideia (Sophists as teachers, Socrates as educator. Plato’s educational Republic, Aristotle’s educational thought). Education in Ancient Rome and pedagogical ideas of M.F. Quintilian. Characteristics of education, school and teaching in Middle Ages. Pedagogical thought in the period of humanism and renaissance (educational ideas of E. Rotterdamus, F. Rabelais, M. Montaigne and L. Vives). Pedagogical work of J.A. Comenius and the birth of new century pedagogy. Pedagogical thought of J. Locke. The Concept of natural education of J.J. Rousseau. Moral education in the work of I. Kant. Education of mind, heart and hand of J.H. Pestalozzi. Pedagogical system of Herbart. Cultural pedagogy, Civic education and work school pedagogy of G. Kerschensteiner. Education for democracy of J. Dewey. Practical courses: Practice. Development of pedagogical terminology. From Plato’s „Republic“ to „City of the Sun“ – educational ideas of T. More and T. Campanella. Educational principles through the history of pedagogical thought, Conceptions of preschool education – pedagogical ideas of F. Froebel. Didactical concept of J.F. Herbart. Anthropological pedagogy of K.D. Ushinski. Pedagogical work of A.S Makarenko. Models of educational work organization in accordance with new school ideas.

Learning Outcomes: Student: - Is familiar with and understands educational ideas in the past. – Individually analyses the original works of pedagogical classics. – Has a critical attitude towards historical pedagogical heritage.
