Course objectives: Over the course of two semesters, students will be introduced to the major events and phenomena of the 20th century, chronologically and by issue: the period of the First world war, history between wars in Europe and beyond Europe, Second world war, period of the „Cold War“. Questions related to politics, economy, history of ideas and cultural history will be examined.

Course description: This course is a general course and is devoted to studying some of the major occurrences and events that marked the history of the 20th century between the years of 1914. and 1990/1. Throughout two semesters with an expected total of 30 lectures, this class will address, divided according to chronology and topic:the period of the First word war, history between wars in Europe and beyond Europe, Second world war, period of the „Cold War“. Attention will be given to (besides looking at the causes, effects and duration of the two world wars and other relevant events in the 20th century) a broader group of questions related to the political history of Europe and key state-players outside of Europe, including the influences and creation of various ideologies and political movements (bolshevism, fascism, national-socialism, changes in parlamentary liberal democracies, ideas of european integration, etc). We will also focus on questions related to economic and social history (economic trends, economic crises,recessions and the steps taken to overcome them, effects of war and ideological „models“ on the economy, demographic changes, migrations, urbanization and similar);

Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to scientifically research social history.
