Intro to studies of Antiquity

Pre-requisites: Passed exam in History of Greece and the Ancient east, and Roman History.

Course objectives: Gaining foundational knowledge that will acquaint students with methodology in working with complex topics in ancient history.

Course description: Chronological and spatial frameworks for history of antiquity. Basic concepts in studying history of the ancient world: chronology, geography, anthropology. Types and characters of sources: 1. historical sources(primary:document and contemporary literature, historiography); 2. material and cultural monuments and artifacts. Sciences in which documentary sources are "published"/verified: epigraphy, papirology, numismatics. Ancient history in similar scientific disciplines (classical philology, egyptology, assyriology, hetitology, iranistics, etruscology, indoeuropeanistics, classical and near eastern archeology, history of law). Manuals, lexicons, atlases, thematic literature, magazines/periodicals, bibliography, collections on sources. History and theory of the science.

Learning Outcomes: To equip students for research in the field of ancient history during master's study program.
