Roman Mining in Serbia

Pre-requisites: None

Course objectives: Introducing students to the development of mining and metallurgy in the central Balkans region during Roman domination over the mining resources, technology, the scope and effectiveness of ore exploitation, organization of mining regions and the specifics of settlers lifestyle.

Course description: Dardanian mining activities (Damastion, Dardanian gold and cinnabar), presence of Thracian Bess people in mining in present day Serbia during the pre roman times; evidence of Breuks, Celts, Pirusts and Sikults in mining activities in the Balkan provinces of the Roman Empire. Cults dedicated to mining deities, royal mines and districts in provinces in present day Serbia, miners money, organization of mines and magistrates, supply of mines and the distribution of half finished products, mines after the Gothic attacks in the 80’ of the 4th century; metallurgical centers, smelted products.
