Course objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce students to major events, themes and ideas in medieval cultural history (1000-1500) as a widespread european phenomenon.

Course description: After a refreshment of defining the field and methodological framework of cultural history in general, the lectures will turn to examining quintessential moments in the development of late medieval culture, at which point the central focus is on the development of religious beliefs/understandings and feelings(ideas of God, pilgrimage, superstition as an element of church and politics,superstition and urbanization, devotio moderna and the roots of reformation. During labs students will have an opportunity to take further what they've learned in lectures by becoming familiar with relevant historical sources and texts that paint a picture of certain events and processes, including reading and analyzing the most interesting excerpts from texts.

Learning Outcomes: Acquired fundamental knowledge of cultural phenomena and events tied to the rise of European Christian civilization in the late middle ages(1000-1500).
