Pre-requisites: Background knowledge in aociology of culture (and mass culture), sociology of art, Sociology of religion, anthropology, history, national literature and the arts in general

Course objectives: To understand concepts on culture and civilization, gain insight into theoretical orientations, especially contemporary ideas in the sociology of culture. Critical approaches towards both universal and particular models, national and minority culture.

Course description: Defining the subject of the sociology of culture and its relationship with sister disciplines (philosophy of culture, history of culture, culturology, ethnological and anthropological studies of culture, cultural anthropology). Examining epistemological, theoretical, methodological and social aspects of the creation and development of sociology of culture. Describing shapes, dynamics, social cultural factors, on the one side, and explaining what is the relative independence and social functions of culture from the various theoretical perspectives on culture, on the other hand. A special focus will be given to problematizing subjects: culture in modern society, discussion on the character of culture and civilization, cultural tradition, relationship of modern to postmodern, pop culture and art. Within the framework of seminar work, research findings on contemporary cultural phenomena will be examined available in serbian and foreign texts, as well as research done by students. Analyzing specific content on the toic of contemporary cultural production.

Learning Outcomes: The ability to conduct theoretical and research work, specifically in the area of the process of culture in Serbia, the Balkans and Europe. Gained multi-disciplinary perspective in understanding the phenomenon of culture.
