Pre-requisites: Knowledge of basic theoretical concepts in the social sciences – an introductory course in the theory of culture and/or society completed

Course objectives: The goal for this course is to introduce students to the basic concepts, theoretical directions and research orientations that address the relationship of society & language.

Course description: This course is composed of the following parts: (1) a short history of the study of language and society – from formal linguistics to a contextual understanding of language; (2) a summary overview of the various disciplines that deal with the society-language relationship, (3) critical examination of formative and contemporary contributions to sociolinguistics and the sociology of language, along with identifying the main theoretical directions and methods; (4) illuminating certain aspects of the language-society relationship that are of particular interest to sociologists. On a practical note, this course encompasses recording of examples of real-life linguistic behaviour and analysis of these examples.

Learning Outcomes: Students will have examined thematic fields of sociolinguistics and the sociology of language, acquired an orientation in the existing literature, problems and methods, which will enable them to conduct small-scale independent research.
