Elective (Theory of Beauty in Classical and Modern Aesthetics)
Status: optional
Recommended Year of Study: 1
Recommended Semester: 1
ECTS Credits Allocated: 10.00
Pre-requisites: None

Course objectives: Students will be introduced to the evolution of views on beauty in classical and modern aesthetics and they will understand the importance of various conceptions of beauty in different philosophical and cultural epochs.

Course description: Issues to be considered include: Plato's and Aristotle's conception of beauty, the dominant influence that these conceptions have had on aesthetic tradition until the beginning of the 18th century; shift in the understanding of beauty that happened at that time and its character, with detailed consideration of conceptions of beauty in the 18th century, especially those of Hume and Kant; redefining the idea of beauty with Hegel, which by itself made the beauty deposed as the central aesthetic category from the time of Romanticism to this day; the renewal of interest in the beauty of today's analytical aesthetics, which is partly related to the inquiry into categorial status of beauty as inherent, dispositional and "projective" property and into ways of its attribution to artworks and other things.

Learning Outcomes: Student should be trained to perceive the scope of classical and modern conceptions of beauty and to assess their importance in philosophy and culture of our time.
