Social Pathology

Pre-requisites: Requirements: Background knowledge from the following courses: Social Pathology - Introduction (part of Social Pathology until 2003), Sociology of Mental Illness, Sociology of Crime (previous name Social Deviance and Deviant Behavior, 2003-2006). Along with this courses, doctoral candidates should have completed the "Issues in Psychiatric Sociology" course, masters level. It is imperative that the Methods of Social Research exam(masters) is completed. Course objectives: Introducing doctorate students to the most current issues in Sociology of Mental Health and Illness and Sociology of Deviance. To portray the interdependence of social-pathological occurrences on social life conditions. To enable doctorate students to independently utilize material in foreign languages to obtain information for empirical research; to independently formulate research problems; work with a mentor to choose appropriate tools and methods for research and to use those plans in working on student's doctoral theses.

Course description: Phenomenology, prevention and treatment of mental illnesses in a social context. - Relationship between certain social factors (demographic and others) and the most common mental illnesses. - Phenomenology and prevention of adolescent delinquency and crime - social aspects. - Research related to issues in Social Pathology such as involuntary hospitalization, patient quality of life in psychiatric hospitals, monographs about psychiatric and prison institutions, social attitudes towards mental illness etc. - Researching the relationship between various social and pathological phenomena with one another and within a broader social context. - Foundational methods for empirical research in Social Pathology.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge of methods of research for particular issues, including choosing appropriate theoretical approaches and the global method, operationalizing research, constructing and using research tools, interpreting research results.
