Course objectives: To train students for problem based approach to pedagogical theory and practice in the past, for critical understanding of pedagogical ideas and relating the historical pedagogical heritage to modern pedagogical theory and practice.

Course description: Theoretical course: The concept, tasks and methodological problems of general history of pedagogy. Ancient educational heritage. Education and schooling in Middle Ages. Pedagogical ideas in the period of humanism and renaissance. Development of New Age pedagogy. Basic problems of pedagogical science through the history of European pedagogical thought: development of pedagogy as a scientific discipline, the relation between pedagogical theory and practice, professionalization and institutionalization of education and teaching, the essence and goal of education, the importance and possibilities of education, different aspects of education. Practical course: Practice. The history of pedagogical ideas: comparative analysis of pedagogical conceptions through the history of pedagogical thought. The use of electronic databases in research. The work of international societies of historians of pedagogy. Analysis of reference periodicals from history of pedagogy.

Learning Outcomes: Student: – Is familiar with and uses the methods and techniques of modern pedagogical historiography - Individually critically analyses the original works of pedagogical classics. – Applies the problem based approach in studying pedagogical theory and practice in the past.
