Latin epigraphs

Pre-requisites: Passed exam in Latin.

Course objectives: For students to gain elementary, theoretical and practical knowledge of latin epigraphs: students will be able to identify types of monuments; categories of inscriptions; types of lettering; basic abbreviations; and read and translate inscriptions.

Course description: Subject, history and meaning of epigraphy as a science. The relationship between epigraphy and other scientific disciplines (history, archeology, philology, law, paleography etc). Categories of latin inscriptions by form, content and usage. Latin inscriptions as sources of history of roman civilizations. Principles of issuing inscriptions and epigraphic publications. Reading and interpreting chosen texts.

Learning Outcomes: Using concrete examples, students will be able to show that they have mastered the principles of issuing epigraphic texts (resolving abbreviations, restoring damaged texts), and are capable of translating the text and commenting on its contents.
