Course objectives: The goal of this subject is research of phenomenon of contemporary, global city, its basic characteristics and relations resulting from globalization process. Students are enabled to get overall picture of relations between urban structure/architecture, latest technological, ecological, culturological trends and socio-economic events, and that contributes to understanding of specifics of a global city and its functioning within worldwide networks.

Course description: It is a combination of ex-cathedra lecturing, case analyses, individual and team work. Theoretical lecturing consists of 14 topics: City in globalization – elements, role, context; Myths and symbols of a city in globalization; Basic characteristics of modern city space; Networks, lines of movement and communications, open space; Global hubs – position, role, architecture, trends; Space of global initiation – city gates, capital connectors, verticals of power; Presentation of selected example; Spaces of urban identity – cornerstones of cultural (dis)continuity, places for purification and regeneration, symbols of national dignity and reconciliation; Spaces of excitation and inhibition – modern arenas, spots for sacred and profane; Urban representation; Case studies; Defining topic and structure of seminar paper; Explanations related to seminar paper.

Learning Outcomes: Lectures are focused on perception of specifics of a global city – socio-economic context, urban transformations, architecture, trends, signs and symbols.
