Course description: After defining the field and methodological framework of cultural history in general, the lectures will deal with defining the spatial and temporal structure of medieval Europe and will examine the role of the sacred, visual, gesture (ritual) and word. Then the course reviews quintessential moments in the development of early medieval culture, at which point the central focus is on the process of the Christianizing of the medieval West and cultural aspects of politics, especially the renewal of monarchies-kingdoms. During labs students will have an opportunity to take further what they've learned in lectures by becoming familiar with relevant historical sources and texts that paint a picture of certain events and processes, including reading and analyzing the most interesting excerpts from texts.

Learning Outcomes: Acquired knowledge of cultural history as a discipline and its role in the context of the development of history as a science, as well as specific knowledge related to cultural history in the early middle ages(500-1000)
