Course objectives: To understand the unique position of Serbia in the middle ages in light of its relationship with the Ottomans and in its regional context. Learning methodology for working with relevant historical sources. Learning to research independently.

Course description: Theoretical component: history of initial military contacts between Turkish(ottoman) and Serbian rulers after the ottomans appearance on the Balkan peninsula. The nature of the ottoman state and its politics towards christian vassals from the end of the 14th century to the Battle at Angora in 1402. The circumstances of the Serbian state at the end of the 14th century till the founding of a new state by Serbian despots after the battle at Angor. Problematizing relationships between serbian lords during the period of ottoman civil wars. The politics and circumstances of the Serbian state while in the control of despot leaders during the rule of Murat II and Mehmed II the conqueror, to the fall of Serbia in 1459. History of Serbian dynasties and their relations within the framework of Serbian-ottoman relations. Practical component: working with texts and literature related to – Serbian lands and the Ottomans in the Middle ages.

Learning Outcomes: Students will have an understanding of the general events, processes and occurrences in the history of Serbian-Ottoman relations at the end of the 14th and first half of the 15th century. Multi-perspective analysis of historical events, using historical sources and literature.
