Also it might be interesting to Academy students who study applied and visual art. Heraldry is a science that studies coats of arms and the art of making images on them. It started in Western Europe due to a number of needs: a) to be able to recognize warriors and participants in competitions; b) visual and symbolic identity of feudal families and individuals, on their shields, arms, clothes etc; pointing out ownership and legal relations. Middle Ages Serbia, under the influence of the Byzantine Empire developed heraldry in the beginning of the XIV century. With the arrival of Turks heraldry dies down. From the beginning of XVI century there is a revival of fictitious (Illyrian) coat of arms and after the liberation from the Turks they gain an official recognition.
