Pre-requisites: Knowledge and understanding of the contemporary physical geography and main historical events in Bosnia in the middle ages is required. For every upcoming class, students will need to read selected texts from the basic course literature and come to class prepared for discussion. Students will each complete a paper based on a subject of choice decided upon in consultation with the lecturer. Some proficiency in English and/or another foreign language is desirable because of literature available.

Course objectives: Students will gain a deeper understanding of the political, economic and cultural history of Bosnia during the Middle Ages. The material will also be viewed through a lens of similar helpful disciplines – archeology, art history and political studies.

Course description: This course will examine the material chronologically and by looking at specific issues. The objective of this course is to study the major developments of the Bosnian state in the middle ages, calling to attention its unique characteristics and developments, both chronologically and structurally. The method used will be comparative, as the material will be studied through analogy with Bosnia's surrounding territories – Serbia and Hungary.
