Course objectives: For doctorate candidates to learn and know specific theories,methodologies and skills necessary for analyzing education as one of the vital elements in the process of modernization. Education will be approached as a specific cultural idea.

Course description: Theoretical component: Examining modernization as a process and social theory (deconstructing the theoretical model and research),the enlightenment, romanticism and the position of children. The age of revolution – education during the beginning of the 19th century (France, Germany, England, Austria, Russia). Education and the creation of a country – the Serbian revolution. Education in Europe in the second half of the 19th century. Modernization of education in the Dukedom and Kingdom of Serbia at the end of the 19th century. Progressive education (origins and development). Educational institutions for war orphans in Serbia in the second half of the 19th century. The role and place of religion in scholastic upbringing., Education in the USA, Education in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century (Germany, Austro-Hungary, England, Bulgaria, Greece). Education in Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century (creation of the academic elite, history of private lives). Writing papers. Practical component: We will visit the Museum of Pedagogy and work with texts and materials, utilizing the library. The total number of classes for praxis is 10.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course, doctoral candidates will be capable of independently conducting academic research by applying a new theoretical model of research to studying social phenomena;producing and publishing scientific articles and will be able to teach on the subject at a university.
