Course objectives: Acquiring fundamental knowledge on the subject of economics and society in the greek state during the classical and hellenistic era.

Course description: Focusing on narrative and documentary sources, this course examines economic and social development in the hellenic world during the classical and hellenestic periods. We will explore vertical social structures from nobility to demos, foreigners and and slaves. Beginning with foundational economic branch - agriculture, we will analyze socio-economic relations in one greek polis through land ownership issues, market relation and price value of products. We will chart the development of a monetary economy as developed through various economic branches - various trades, traveling salesmen, marine activity and polis's economic dependence on in the hellenistic period on the great hellenic monarchies.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge of economics and society ikn the greek state during the classical and hellenistic era.
