Course objectives: Introduction into historical development of adult education and learning and understanding the interdependence between learning and education of adults and social, political and economical factors through history.

Course description: Theoretical course: - General and national history of adult education include: - the history of ideas about the education of adults, different theoretical approaches and conceptions; - the history of adult education and learning practice in different periods and societies; - the birth and early development of adult education as a scientific discipline; - Periodical approach to the education of adults: Early civilizations, Ancient Greece and Rome, Middle Ages, humanism and renaissance, reformation, modern age. Biographical approach to the education of adults – Sophists, Plato, Aristotle, J.A. Comenius (Komensky), social utopists, N.F.S. Grundtvig, A. Medinski, M.Buber. – Social movements in education of adults – University extension in England, Folk high schools in Denmark. Free national education in Germany. Practical course: - Resources for studying education and learning of adults – Educational documentation – types, distribution, storage and search.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the programme, student will: - understand the learning and education of adults as a lifelong and lifewide phenomenon through historical perspective; - acknowledge the legislation and understand which social-historical context shapes the education of adults.
